Overview of our Church Expansion
With prayer and careful evaluation it was determined that an expansion of current facilities was needed in order to serve the long term needs of the Rogers-Hassan community. This expansion would include a Parish Church, Fellowship Hall and an Education Center. The purpose of this article is to summarize key decisions and milestones over the past two years.

Fall 06:  Domaine Forte, design consultant, produced architectural drawings showing two design options which were Gothic and Romanesque.

Feb 07:  The Gothic and Romanesque design options were presented to the parish in town hall meetings. Our eight essential characteristics of the parish were presented and discussed. These characteristics represent the vision the parish would reference all decisions on facilities expansion through out the expansion process. These essential characteristics are presented on a separate page insert in this week’s bulletin.

May 07:  With the approval of the Archbishop the Rogers down town site was selected as the future home of our facilities expansion including a Parish Church, Fellowship Hall and an Education Center.

Sept 07:  A number of committees were formed to support our expansion project.

Building Committee- One for each of the new buildings. This group will focus on function and layout only. Current Facilities Committee: This group will consider what needs to be done with the current structures to make room for the new buildings. Please note: The current St.Martin church will be integrated into the master design as a school mass chapel, wedding chapel and a funeral chapel. Development Committee: This group will focus on the preparation required to launch a future capital campaign. Executive Committee: An over-arching group to coordinate the activities of the different committees. This group is made up of the Pastor, Trustees and the chair person from each committee.

Sept 07:  The parish was requested to view and vote during the church festival on which design (Gothic or Romanesque) they would like to see our parish pursue.

Sept 30th:  The results from our design vote were announced. The Gothic design was selected by the parish for our facilities expansion. In a future newsletter we will present an overview of the Gothic design and its key design attributes.

Nov 07:  A recommendation was made by the Pastoral Council that we start with the construction of a Fellowship Hall and Church as our first priority.  If both cannot be built at the same time, then the fellowship hall should be built first.

Feb 08: Announced that the church has made a land purchase which brings our total land for development at the downtown site to 9.16 acres.

March 15th:  KKE, a well known architectural firm was retained to present findings on several different design options for the Fellowship Hall following a Saturday Mass. This meeting focused on the pros and cons of each design option. Valuable feedback was obtained during this meeting. A survey form was passed out for parish members to provide their individual thoughts on design priorities. These will be compiled so that preferences and priorities can be carefully considered as we move towards an updated design.

StWalburga

The Catholic Church of Mary Queen of Peace

Formerly St. Martin of Tours and St. Walburga

In January, 2003, St. Walburga and St. Martin churches merged to form the Catholic Church of Mary Queen of Peace.

St. Walburga Roman Catholic Church, 12020 Fletcher Lane, Rogers, is one of the oldest Catholic Churches in Northwest Hennepin County.  The parish was founded in 1857.  The original site of the church was on County Road 117, about one quarter mile west of County Road 116.  A small parish cemetery remains.  The present church, built in 1883, replaced an 1880 structure.  St. Walburga operated a school until the 1970’s.

St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church, 21304 Church Avenue, Rogers, was founded in 1912 with a grade school beginning in 1950.  Mary Queen of Peace Catholic School currently serves pre-K through 8th grade.   Please call the school office at 763-428-2355 for more information.

4th grade are trained as candle bearers; those going into 5th grade (and older) are trained for cross and book.  The Altar Servers Program is open to children who have received the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Volunteers must complete a server training.  Servers must arrive at church at least 15 minutes prior to the beginning of Mass to light candles and to follow the priest’s instructions as to special occasions.

LECTORS - Lectors proclaim the Word of the Lord and read the general intercessions.  Lectors generally read 1 (one) time every 2 to 3 months.  The requirements to be a reader are that you are confirmed and attend a workshop.  Lectors must arrive at church at least 15 minutes prior to the beginning of Mass.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION - As an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, you are first and foremost a member of the body of Christ, one of the holy people of God. Extraordinary Ministers distribute Holy Communion (The Body of Christ, Precious Blood) to the congregation, along with the priest and deacon.  After an interview process, training is required.

WEEKEND SACRISTAN (SET-UP AND CLEAN UP LITURGICAL ITEMS BEFORE/AFTER MASS) - Be at church 30 minutes prior to the beginning of Mass to set-up chalice, ciboria, etc.  Place water, wine & hosts on the table in back of church, chalice & paten on credence table, turn on sound system, lights, etc. and clean-up same after Mass.

USHERS/GREETERS - An Usher/greeter is the person with a gift for hospitality.  Ushers greet people warmly as they direct them to an open seat.  They take up the offering and care for any needs during the liturgy.  At the end of Mass, the Ushers distribute the bulletin and safeguard the weekend collection.  Ushers are assigned approximately once every 6 weeks.  Ushers must arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the beginning of Mass to:

· Open windows if necessary

· Greet parishioners/visitors

· Assist finding open seating if needed

· Take up collection

· Find family to bring gifts forward

· Safeguard collection
